NFL Transactions: Miami Dolphins Tackle Terron Armstead Retires

The Miami Dolphins offense suddenly finds itself with a major question mark at one of the game's most important positions. Five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Terron Armstead announced his retirement after 12 years in the NFL.

Armstead entered the league at the 75th overall pick of the 2013 NFL Draft. As a spectacularly athletic but somewhat injury-prone offensive lineman, he appeared in 97 games for the New Orleans Saints before joining the Dolphins as a free agent in 2022, where he played 38 games and earned two Pro Bowls.

Armstead didn't make a Pro Bowl last year, but that likely had more to do with the overall struggles of the Dolphins offense than his own efficacy. He started 15 games in 2024 and earned a stellar 89.4 overall grade from Pro Football Focus for his efforts, the third-best mark in the league among tackles.

Armstead's absence will immediately leave the Dolphins with a gaping hole at left tackle. Given that the free agency market has already been thoroughly picked over, they may have no choice but to look to the upcoming draft to find his replacement.

If the Dolphins don't end up striking gold with Armstead's successor, their offense will suffer for it. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has famously suffered a series of concussions in recent years, even with Armstead's frequently elite protection. A lesser tackle could expose Tagovailoa to further injury, which would all but doom the Dolphins' offense.
