New England Patriots News: Defensive Tackle Christian Barmore Participating in Offseason Program

The New England Patriots could have their best defensive player back in the fold. On the Patriots' official X account, defensive tackle Christian Barmore was seen reporting to the team's facility for offseason activities on Monday.

Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel revealed Barmore was ready to participate in offseason work last week. The fourth-year lineman's status has been in doubt ever since a blood clot diagnosis cost him all but four appearances during the 2024 season.

Barmore is arguably the most promising cornerstone of the Patriots' defense. Over 17 appearances in 2023, he amassed 8.5 sacks and 16 quarterback hits, both of which led the team. That dominance inspired the Patriots to sign him to a four-year, $84 million contract in his first year of extension eligibility.

Unfortunately for the Patriots, that's when Barmore's troubles started. The emerging star's career was briefly in doubt following his blood clot diagnosis in September, and his production waned significantly when he returned late in the season. Over 123 defensive snaps, Barmore registered one sack and one tackle for loss while earning a middling 56.5 overall grade from Pro Football Focus.

A healthy, problem-free offseason could help Barmore reemerge as a force along the defensive line. He should also benefit from the Patriots free agency additions on defense. The Patriots broke the bank to land former Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Milton Williams and former Tennessee Titans edge rusher Harold Landry. The addition of those two players could afford Barmore more chances to wreak havoc on the inside.

That's assuming Barmore can get healthy enough to make the most of his opportunities. Availability at this point in the offseason is a good start, but the Patriots are still a long way away from truly meaningful game action. Hopefully, Barmore will be able to get his feet back under him.
