Report: Patriots Nearly Made Blockbuster Trade

The New England Patriots considered making a major move to address their left tackle situation by trading for five-time Pro Bowler Laremy Tunsil.

The Houston Texans ultimately sent Tunsil to the Washington Commanders in exchange for a package of draft picks, a price that reportedly equated to a third-rounder and fifth-rounder in this year's draft.

While Tunsil would have been a major upgrade over Vederian Lowe, who struggled last season as Drake Maye’s blindside protector, the Patriots ultimately opted to stay out of the bidding.

"They understand as well as anyone that they need help at left tackle," NBC Sports Boston’s Phil Perry wrote. "Tunsil undoubtedly would have represented a significant upgrade at the position and would have dramatically improved their on-field product."

Beyond the cost in draft capital, the Patriots had concerns about Tunsil’s fit within the culture Mike Vrabel is trying to build in Foxboro.

The star tackle led the NFL with 19 penalties last season and has a reputation for inconsistent practice habits, which may have contributed to Houston’s decision to move him despite their status as contenders with a young franchise quarterback in C.J. Stroud.

New England is focused on adding players who embody the work ethic and leadership Vrabel values, and taking on Tunsil’s $21 million salary could have sent a mixed message to the locker room. "They've made it a very clear goal to prioritize adding positive influences on the culture," Perry explained.

With Tunsil now in Washington, the Patriots must find another solution at left tackle, even if it’s a temporary one. The free-agent market isn’t particularly strong, but there are still serviceable options available.
