NFL Trade Rumors: Seattle Seahawks Seeking Massive Haul in D.K. Metcalf Trade

The Seattle Seahawks are finally open to trading their star pass catcher, but they won't part with him cheaply. According to the Athletic's Dianna Russini, the Seahawks are looking for a first-round pick and a third-round pick in exchange for two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver D.K. Metcalf.

Russini also notes that Metcalf will be seeking a contract worth approximately $30 million per year, which would place him among the 10 highest-paid wide receivers in the league.

Metcalf requested a trade earlier in the week, and the Seahawks reportedly are exploring their options. The Seahawks also recently released longtime fellow wide receiver Tyler Lockett.

At 6'4" and 235 lbs with 4.33 speed, Metcalf is one of the most physically overwhelming wide receivers in the league. Over 97 appearances with the Seahawks, he has amassed 6324 receiving yards and 48 touchdowns.

As striking an on-field presence as Metcalf is, a first-round pick and a third-round is a pretty steep asking price from the Seahawks. The Washington Commanders just acquired former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel for a fifth-round pick, and Metcalf shouldn't be considered a significantly more valuable player. He has only exceeded 70 yards per game once in his career, and that was in 2020. He has also failed to exceed a 100 passer rating on throws in his direction in each of his past three seasons.

Still, a first-round pick and a third-round pick for a player of Metcalf's calibre wouldn't be totally unprecedented. The Philadelphia Eagles acquired A.J. Brown from the Tennessee Titans for exactly that package back in 2022. Brown was a similarly productive and powerful pass catcher at that point in his career, averaging 69.7 receiving yards per game through his first three seasons. Over six years in the NFL, Metcalf has averaged a similarly respectable 65.2.

Ultimately, Metcalf should be considered one of the most valuable commodities available this offseason. He's still only 27 years old, and few pass catchers around the league can offer his staggering upside. He belongs on an ascendant team that's desperate for a field-tilting pass catcher, like the Los Angeles Chargers or the Denver Broncos.
