NFL Trade Rumors: Pittsburgh Steelers Meeting With Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers is getting closer to finding a new home. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Gerry Dulac, the former Green Bay Packers and New York Jets quarterback is visiting the Pittsburgh Steeler's facility today.

ESPN's Adam Schefter later confirmed the report but clarified that a deal between the Steelers and Rodgers wasn't close.

Since being released by the New York Jets, Rodgers has been linked to several teams this offseason, including the Steelers, the New York Giants, the Minnesota Vikings, and even the Los Angeles Rams.

The Vikings and Rams never made much sense for Rodgers. They both already have quarterbacks in place, and Rodgers was always a poor bet to provide an upgrade. He has been thoroughly ineffectual over his past three seasons, amassing a 14-21 record while averaging 5.85 net yards per passing attempt and 216.9 passing yards per game.

As for the Giants, it was always difficult to see what they had to offer from a coaching or roster perspective. They've finished 30th or worse in points scored in four of their past five seasons and are coming off a disastrous 3-14 season. Perhaps most alarmingly, they've allowed a preposterous 133 sacks since 2023. Unless Rodgers is eager to stay in the region despite his underwhelming stint with the Jets, the Giants seem like a poor fit for the 41-year-old.

Barring a stunning injury to a starting quarterback in the near future, Rodgers is unlikely to find a better situation than the Steelers. They've made the playoffs in four of the past five seasons, even with often middling quarterback play. They also have a credible wide receiver duo in George Pickens and the recently acquired D.K. Metcalf.

Ultimately, the Steelers are Rodgers' best available chance at a dignified end to his Hall of Fame career. The fact that a deal isn't imminent is curious. If the Steelers decide they'd prefer to pursue a different course at quarterback, like re-signing last year's starter Russell Wilson, Rodgers might be better off walking away from the game than risking another disastrous season with a team like the Giants.
