NFL Free Agency: Chris Godwin Turned Down 'Big' Contract Offers
According to Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht, "there was one that just kept writing a blank check." Despite the massive interest and the opportunity to cash in elsewhere, Godwin chose to return to Tampa Bay on a three-year, $66 million deal—a clear signal that money wasn’t his top priority.

Licht admitted he feared the Bucs might lose Godwin, especially with the receiver coming off a red-hot start to the 2024 season before a dislocated ankle cut it short in Week 7.
“He left a lot of money on the table,” Licht said. “He valued the culture here, the city, the fans, being able to hopefully retire as a Buccaneer.”
Godwin confirmed he was “really close” to leaving but ultimately prioritized familiarity, chemistry with quarterback Baker Mayfield, and loyalty to a team he’s been with since 2017.

At 29, Godwin was on pace for a career year with 50 catches, 576 yards, and five touchdowns in just seven games before the injury.
His recovery is reportedly going well, with Licht expressing full confidence in his return. “He’s hitting all of his markers,” Licht said. “I would never bet against Chris.”
With his new contract signed, the star receiver remains a core piece of Tampa Bay’s locker room culture—and a rare example of a player choosing team fit and legacy over the biggest payday.
