NFL Trade Rumors: San Francisco 49ers Looking to Extend Quarterback Brock Purdy
The San Francisco 49ers are about to back up the Brinks truck. While speaking on Monday at a ceremony celebrating Super Bowl LX in the Bay area, 49ers owner Jed York doubled down on his belief and commitment to quarterback Brock Purdy.

"I know we want Brock to be here for a long time," York said, per the Associated Press, "and we'll do everything we can to make that work."
Purdy is extension-eligible for the first time in his career after finishing up his third season as a pro. His ascent from last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft to Super Bowl starter is one of the most startling star turns in NFL history, and recent reports have indicated he could command as much as $60 million per year on his next contract.
Purdy is coming off his worst season as a pro, but the 49ers shouldn't be discouraged. Over 36 starts, he has amassed a 23-13 record and passed for 9518 yards, 64 touchdowns, and 27 interceptions while averaging an astounding 8.01 net yards per passing attempt. He also led the 49ers to consecutive NFC Championship game appearances following the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
Purdy's 6-9 record in 2024 was eyebrow-raising, but some of that can be attributed to unfortunate circumstances. The 49ers finished with a -10 turnover differential, and offensive stars Christian McCaffrey, Brandon Aiyuk, Trent Williams, and Deebo Samuel all missed multiple games.
With any luck, the 49ers should be a significantly more competitive team in 2025. Still, extending Purdy could have long-term ramifications. The 49ers have benefitted from his extremely cheap rookie deal; if Purdy is going to occupy an extra $55-60 million per year on his next contract, the 49ers could eventually have a hard time surrounding him with the abundance of talent he has enjoyed so far through his career.
Ultimately, it's difficult to argue with Purdy's success so far, but if the 49ers are going to continue contending for years to come, he'll have to prove he's genuinely one of the NFL's best quarterbacks. That will eventually mean lifting up lesser offenses. Clearly, the 49ers believe he's capable.
