NFL Trade Rumors: New England Patriots Could Pursue Trade for Wide Receiver

The New England Patriots are assessing their weaknesses, and they think they've found a key one. According to the Athletic's Chad Graff, the Patriots could "aggressively pursue" a trade for an elite wide receiver this offseason.

The Patriots' passing game has been stuck in the mud for years, and it isn't getting better. They finished 31st in points scored in 2023 and 30th in 2024, largely due to their inability to develop pass-catching talent via the draft or find cost-effective productivity via free agency.

A trade may be the Patriots' best (and even only) path to acquiring a game-changing talent at wide receiver. The free agent market is looking a little barren following rumors that the Cincinnati Bengals may franchise tag Tee Higgins and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers intend to re-sign Chris Godwin.

Meanwhile, several currently signed pass catchers are reportedly looking for new homes. The Los Angeles Rams have let it be known they want to move Cooper Kupp, and the New York Jets are no longer a logical home for Davante Adams following their falling out with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The San Francisco 49ers are also reportedly open to trading wide receiver Deebo Samuel.

The Patriots are wise to consider all avenues when it comes to improving their passing corps. Undervaluing the wide receiver position was easier to get away with when they had Tom Brady throwing passes, but it's clearly held them back since he left town.

Despite the state of last year's offense, the Patriots and their fans believe they've found something in 2024 third-overall pick Drake Maye. However, no quarterback is beyond sabotage. If the Patriots want their young passer to grow into a star, they should do everything they can to help him through his rough early years. Even if it means parting with draft picks and cap space.
