NFL Trade Rumors: Houston Texans Open to Bringing Back WR Stefon Diggs
The Houston Texans are willing to give one of their 2024 offseason splashes another chance. Speaking on Sports Radio 610 in Houston, Texans executive vice president and general manager Nick Caserio said "the door is open" for impending free agent wide receiver Stefon Diggs to return to the team in 2025.
The Texans acquired Diggs from the Buffalo Bills in April of last year in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. They quickly agreed to an adjusted contract that would render Diggs a free agent following the 2024 season.ICYMI: Texans GM Nick Caserio chats exclusively with Payne & Pendergast https://t.co/wfqyKiqxQP

That decision may come back to haunt Diggs. The four-time Pro Bowler tore his ACL eight games into the regular season. At 31 years old, Diggs is now set to enter free agency as a drastically distressed asset.
At a distance, the Texans' initial experiment with Diggs would seem like a disappointment. Offensive Rookie of the Year Quarterback C.J. Stroud regressed in his second year, falling from 273.9 passing yards per game to 219.2 and 7.03 net yards per passing attempt to 5.68. Those inadequacies in the passing game resulted in the Texans scoring an underwhelming 21.9 points per game through the regular season.
Still, Diggs wasn't necessarily to blame. Pass catchers Tank Dell and Nico Collins also suffered untimely injuries, leaving the Texans short-handed on multiple occasions. For his part, Diggs averaged a respectable 62.0 receiving yards per game and 7.8 yards per target in his eight appearances. He also posted a strong 104.7 passer rating on throws in his direction.
A reunion between Diggs and the Texans makes sense for both sides. It's unlikely he'll draw significant interest on the open market, and he has already proven he can be an effective WR2 or WR3 in the Texans offense. Rehabbing his value for a year in a familiar system before testing free agency again next offseason is his best option.
