NFL Trade Rumors: Las Vegas Raiders Closing in on Offensive Coordinator
The band appears to be getting back together in Las Vegas. According to the Athletic's Vic Tafur, former Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell has emerged as the favorite to land the same position with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Bevell would be joining fellow former Seahawk Pete Carroll, who accepted the Raiders' head coaching job last week. The duo worked together from 2011 to 2017, a glorious era in Seahawks history that included a pair of Super Bowl berths and the team's first and only championship following the 2013 season. All signs right now point to Bevell. https://t.co/buO08F1rtU

The Raiders may have an ulterior motive in hiring Bevell. They're reportedly showing interest in quarterback Russell Wilson, who made nine Pro Bowls with the Seahawks from 2012 to 2022 and rose to prominence in the league under Bevell. Wilson will likely hit unrestricted free agency after a hit-and-miss season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and presenting a familiar structure for him in Las Vegas could be just what it takes entice him to sign.
Still, chasing the halcyon days of the 2010s Seahawks may not be a recipe for success. At 73 years old, Pete Carroll is the the oldest head coach in the league. Bevell has also been positively woeful since leaving the Seahawks: In 2021, his last season as an OC, his Jacksonville Jaguars finished 32nd in scoring with a pitiful 14.9 points per game. Carroll and Bevell's best days may be well behind them.
The same may be true for Wilson. The future Hall of Famer isn't the assett he once was. He'll turn 37 years old later this year, and his 17-24 record over the past three years speaks to how much his efficacy has waned. Over that span, he's averaged a subpar 5.88 net yards per passing attempt.
If the Raiders are going to get back to the playoffs, they'll need to find fresh blood. Chasing Wilson won't help them; They need to find and develop a young quarterback. Whether or not Carroll and Bevell are the men to do it remains to be seen.
