Moore has a long history with the Cowboys. He joined the organization as a quarterbacks coach in 2018 under head coach Jason Garrett before quickly moving up to offensive coordinator in 2019. He retained his position after Garrett was fired and continued to call plays under Mike McCarthy until 2022. He spent one underwhelming year with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023 before bouncing back with the Eagles this season.
Moore found a lot of success with the Cowboys, even across two different head coaches. His offenses finished sixth or better in points scored in three of his four seasons. He could provide the Cowboys with continuity following McCarthy's departure.
Still, signing Moore would be a somewhat underwhelming move for a Cowboys organization that has signalled its recent success isn't enough. If maintaining what they already had was a high priority for the Cowboys, they could have kept McCarthy. Moore has already shown he wasn't necessarily a critical cog in the success of the offense: the Cowboys scored a league-best 29.9 points per game the season following his departure.
If the Cowboys really want to change their fortunes, they'll need to do something bold. Hiring Moore is a half-measure; at best, he'll help the Cowboys achieve to the degree they did last time he was with the team. The Cowboys have already decided that wasn't enough by letting McCarthy walk away.
