NFL Trade Rumors: Dallas Cowboys 'Enamored' With Colorado Coach Deion Sanders

The Dallas Cowboys may have a major splash in mind. According to Cowboys insider Ed Werder, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones "is enamored with the idea" of making Colorado Buffaloes coach and NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders his next head coach.

Sanders, who won a Super Bowl with the Cowboys following the 1995 season, has had a rapid and shocking ascent through the college football coaching ranks. Following three years with the Jackson State Tigers in the FCS, Sanders jumped to Colorado in 2022, where he amassed a 13-12 record over two seasons and oversaw the development of Heisman Trophy-winning defensive back/wide receiver Travis Hunter and quarterback Shedeur Sanders. Both are expected to be top picks in the 2025 NFL Draft.

The Cowboys are in need of a new head coach after allowing Mike McCarthy's contract to expire. McCarthy managed a 49-35 record over his five-year tenure with the team, but his 1-3 record in the postseason clearly left the organization wanting more.

Sanders played five seasons with the Cowboys, so a reunion would certainly spark warm feelings for all involved, not to mention a media frenzy. Still, expectations are much, much higher for America's Team than a midrange Big 12 program like Colorado. Sanders succeeded at the college level because he put the Buffaloes on the map, but that didn't exactly translate to on-field success: Colorado finished outside the top 20 in the final College Football Playoff Rankings during both his seasons.

Sanders is a huge star and would undoubtedly help restore the Cowboys' status as the center of the football universe, but hype will only go so far. If he's going to last in the NFL, he'll need to achieve to a degree he never did in college, and fast. Otherwise, the Cowboys could be looking for a new head coach again in a couple of years.
