The Cowboys are in need of a new head coach after allowing Mike McCarthy's contract to expire. McCarthy managed a 49-35 record over his five-year tenure with the team, but his 1-3 record in the postseason clearly left the organization wanting more.
Following a successful four-year stint as the defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers, Saleh joined the Jets in 2021 but was fired five games into the 2024 season. He amassed a 20-36 record due largely to the persistent struggles of his offense. Saleh's Jets never averaged more than 19.9 points per game in any of his four seasons at the helm.
To Saleh's credit, he has proven he can put competent defenses on the field. In his eight seasons as a defensive coordinator or head coach, his defenses have finished fifth or better in yards allowed five times.
That defensive success could make Saleh a good fit for a Cowboys franchise that already has several key offensive pieces in place. With quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb leading the charge, the Cowboys finished first, fourth, and first in points scored from 2021 to 2023. If Saleh can handle his side of the ball without sabotaging Prescott and Lamb, the Cowboys could have a winning formula.
