NFL Rumors: Matthew Stafford Considering Retirement?
Matthew Stafford’s NFL future is uncertain following the Los Angeles Rams’ 28-22 divisional playoff loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
The 36-year-old quarterback, completing his 16th NFL season, told reporters he plans to “take some time” before deciding whether to return. “It’s 30 minutes after the last game, so I’ll take some time to think about it,” Stafford said.
Despite his hesitation, he expressed confidence in his abilities, adding, “I feel like I was playing some pretty good ball,” and when asked if he has more football left in him, he replied, “Sure feels like it.”

Stafford showed he still has a lot to give this past season, as he threw for 3,762 yards, 20 touchdowns, and just eight interceptions while leading the Rams to an NFC West title after a rocky 1-4 start.
Even in the playoff loss, he showed resilience, passing for 324 yards and two touchdowns despite playing through a rib injury. Rams head coach Sean McVay praised Stafford’s leadership and toughness, calling him a “total freaking stud” and emphasizing his impact on the team during a challenging season.
However, McVay declined to speculate on Stafford’s future, stating, “I’m not really interested in talking about anything as it relates to next year.”

With two years remaining on his contract, Stafford’s decision could have major implications for the Rams. He has previously considered retirement and is due a $4 million roster bonus in March, which makes a timely decision crucial for the team’s planning.
While Stafford’s strong finish to the season, including 13 touchdowns and three interceptions over the last two months, suggests he can still thrive, the choice remains with him.
Reflecting on his passion for the game, Stafford said, “I love competing. I love being in those moments. Next time I’m out there, line it up. Let’s do it again.”
