Houston Texans Make Big Coaching Move

The Houston Texans have made a big coaching move, parting ways with offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik and offensive line coach Chris Strausser following their second consecutive AFC South title and back-to-back playoff appearances.

The decision comes after a disappointing 2024 campaign where the offense regressed to 22nd in total yards and 19th in scoring, culminating in a divisional-round loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Injuries to key players such as Stefon Diggs, Tank Dell, and Joe Mixon exposed flaws in pass protection and play-calling, leading to quarterback C.J. Stroud being sacked 52 times and throwing 12 interceptions.

“We have high expectations for this team,” head coach DeMeco Ryans stated. “To compete in the AFC, we need to make the most of our opportunities on both sides of the ball.”

Slowik’s firing is a sharp turn from his promising debut in 2023, when he helped guide Stroud to NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and transformed the Texans into a top-12 offense, earning their first playoff victory in four years.

However, the 2024 season revealed persistent issues, including Strausser’s injury-riddled offensive line that struggled to protect Stroud or establish a consistent ground game.

Fans grew frustrated with Slowik’s inability to adapt his schemes, and the offense became overly reliant on the defense to carry the team in key moments. Despite finishing 10-7 and winning a Wild Card game, the Texans lacked the offensive firepower to compete against elite opponents.

Ryans will lead the search for new coaches capable of maximizing the team’s potential and building on its recent success. “We need to build on our progress and find the right people to get us to the next level,” Ryans said.
