Detroit Lions Receive Great News On David Montgomery

The Detroit Lions received great news ahead of their divisional playoff game against the Washington Commanders as running back David Montgomery is set to return from what was initially thought to be a season-ending knee injury.

Montgomery tore his MCL in a Week 15 loss to the Buffalo Bills but opted for rehabilitation over surgery after seeking multiple medical opinions.

Head coach Dan Campbell confirmed Montgomery’s availability, saying, “He’s a tone-setter, a catalyst, and it’s going to be good to get him back.”

In Montgomery’s absence, second-year back Jahmyr Gibbs thrived, averaging 121.7 rushing yards per game and scoring eight touchdowns over the final three contests.

Gibbs' explosive performances helped secure the NFC North title and kept Detroit’s rushing attack among the league’s best.

While Gibbs carried the load admirably, Montgomery’s bruising running style and ability as a receiver provide the Lions with a versatile and dangerous backfield tandem. Campbell praised Montgomery as a “bell cow” whose skill set complements Gibbs’ dynamic playmaking.

The Lions, coming off a first-round bye, are preparing to lean on their sixth-ranked rushing attack against a Commanders defense that struggled against the run this season.

Montgomery contributed 775 rushing yards, 12 touchdowns, and 341 receiving yards during the regular season.
