Veteran Cornerback Comes Out Of Retirement To Sign With Chiefs
A third-round pick by Kansas City in the 2015 NFL Draft, Nelson spent four seasons with the Chiefs, playing 52 games and starting 38 while helping the team reach the playoffs every year.
After departing in 2018, just before the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LIV victory, Nelson built a solid career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles, and Houston Texans, accumulating 13 career interceptions, 78 passes defended, and 456 tackles across 130 games.
His return brings valuable experience and familiarity to a Chiefs roster looking to strengthen its secondary.

Nelson’s decision comes at a crucial moment for Kansas City, which holds the AFC's best record at 12-1 but has recently dealt with depth concerns in the defensive backfield.
General Manager Brett Veach credited Nelson’s leadership and skill set as driving factors behind the move. “Steven’s experience and leadership make him an invaluable addition as we head into the postseason,” Veach said.
Nelson last played in 2023 with the Texans, where he recorded four interceptions, 12 passes defended, and 63 tackles while helping Houston make a surprise playoff run.
After announcing his retirement in June 2024, Nelson was persuaded to return to his original team to provide stability and mentorship as Kansas City pushes for its third Super Bowl title in five years.

Though Nelson will start on the practice squad to reacclimate, the Chiefs plan to activate him for the postseason.
Nelson expressed excitement about returning to the organization where his NFL journey began. “It’s a great feeling to be back where it all started,” he said. “I’m ready to contribute however I can to help this team win another championship.”
With Kansas City’s defense showing signs of strain late in the season, Nelson’s arrival could prove to be a big addition as the Chiefs aim for another deep playoff run.
