Saints Sign Running Back Following Alvin Kamara Injury

The New Orleans Saints have signed former Kansas City Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire after Alvin Kamara suffered a groin injury during the team’s Week 15 loss to the Washington Commanders.

Kamara’s status for Week 16 remains uncertain, and Edwards-Helaire brings valuable depth to a backfield that has dealt with injuries throughout the season.

He joins a group that includes Jamaal Williams, Kendre Miller, and Jordan Mims, all of whom have been called upon at different points during the year.

Edwards-Helaire, 25, returns to his home state after being released by the Chiefs earlier this week and clearing waivers.

A former LSU standout and first-round pick in 2020, Edwards-Helaire brings championship experience to New Orleans, having won two Super Bowls with Kansas City.

Despite showing promise early in his career, his production declined, and he did not appear in a game during the 2024 season. "This is a great opportunity for me to contribute to a team that’s pushing for the playoffs," Edwards-Helaire said after signing. "I’m ready to help however I can."

The Saints are currently 5-9, behind the 7-7 Atlanta Falcons and the 8-6 Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC South.
