Report: Ben Johnson Very "Intrigued" By One Team's Head Coaching Job

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is reportedly intrigued by the Chicago Bears’ head coaching vacancy, viewing it as a chance to work with rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, whom many consider a generational talent.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Johnson is drawn to the Bears’ situation because of their offensive playmakers like D.J. Moore, Rome Odunze, Keenan Allen, and D’Andre Swift, significant cap space, and extra draft resources.

While the Bears have a history of dysfunction, the prospect of coaching Williams in a major market with substantial tools for building a contender makes the role particularly appealing. “There’s a lot to like in Chicago,” Pelissero stated, pointing to the pieces already in place to support a strong offense.

Johnson’s innovative play-calling has been a cornerstone of Detroit’s success during their franchise-record 13-win season.

The Lions, leading the NFL in scoring with 32.9 points per game, showcased Johnson’s creativity in a recent win over the Bears.

One standout moment came on a trick play dubbed “stumblebum,” where quarterback Jared Goff faked a fumble before throwing a touchdown to tight end Sam LaPorta. Players like LaPorta have praised Johnson’s attention to detail and bold strategies, with the tight end calling him “as creative as they come.”

Johnson’s ability to transform offenses has made him a sought-after candidate for teams seeking a new vision.

While Johnson has previously been cautious about leaving Detroit, his recent comments suggest he is ready to embrace the challenge of becoming a head coach.

“There’s a burning desire in every man to find what he’s made out of, push the limits, and see if he’s got what it takes,” Johnson said.
