NFL Trade Rumors: Jacksonville Jaguars Quarterback Trevor Lawrence Out for the Season
The Jacksonville Jaguars' disastrous 2024 season has suffered its biggest blow yet. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Jags quarterback Trevor Lawrence is expected to undergo surgery on his injured AC joint, likely ending his season.

The Jaguars placed Lawrence on injured reserve earlier this week following a concussion in Sunday's 23-20 loss to the Houston Texans. Lawrence endured a brutal and controversial hit to the head in the game, but the surgery is unrelated. Lawrence initially suffered the AC joint injury in Week 9 during a 28-23 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He missed two games before returning to action on Sunday.
The Jaguars will likely turn to backup quarterback Mac Jones to finish out the season. The former New England Patriot has struggled in his limited action this year, losing both his starts by a combined 75-13. Ultimately, that should help the Jaguars. At 2-10, they're better off chasing the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft than winning games.
Lawrence is expected to make a full recovery for the 2025 season, but he may return to a very different Jaguars team. Ownership is expected to part ways with head coach Dough Pederson and general manager Trent Baalke, and new figures at the top of the organization could mean the roster sees drastic upheaval.
If any player on the Jaguars is safe, it's probably Lawrence. The team signed him to a five-year, $275 million extension this past season that locks him up through the 2030 season, but even that isn't quite as ironclad as it appears. Hypothetically, the Jaguars could trade Lawrence with a post-June 1st designation as soon as next year and actually save cap space (per overthecap).
Lawrence won't be shielded from blame forever. The Jaguars are 22-38 with him as their starter, and if they continue to stumble despite sweeping changes next year, they may have to consider the possibility that Lawrence simply isn't a franchise quarterback. His 2025 season could be a pivotal one.
