Report: Arthur Smith Almost Took Different Head Coaching Job Before Joining Steelers
Before joining Mike Tomlin’s staff in February, Smith was approached by his alma mater, the University of North Carolina (UNC), about their head coaching vacancy following the dismissal of Mack Brown.
As a former offensive lineman for the Tar Heels and a graduate assistant in 2006, Smith has deep ties to the program. Despite his affection for UNC, he ultimately turned down the chance to lead the team.
“Reality is, [UNC] reached out on a preliminary call,” Smith explained. “I appreciate it, love that place. But that’s not my focus. I’ve got one of the best jobs in football right now.”

Smith’s decision to pass on UNC shows a shift in his perspective following his tenure as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, where he compiled a 21-30 record over three seasons.
While he acknowledged he might have jumped at the UNC opportunity earlier in his career, he noted the importance of stability and culture in his current role. “Probably five years ago, I’d have walked there to take it,” Smith said. “But my perspective’s different now. When you’ve got something good, like I have here in Pittsburgh, it’s hard to walk away.”
Reports also suggested Smith was considered for other NFL head coaching opportunities, but he prioritized joining a team with a strong foundation where he could focus on revitalizing an offense.
If Arthur Smith leaves, I do not trust the Steelers to find and hire an OC that runs a current NFL offense.

Now firmly entrenched in Pittsburgh, Smith has been instrumental in reshaping the Steelers’ offense, which ranks eighth in rushing yards per game and has helped the team climb to first place in the AFC North with an 8-3 record.
While challenges like red-zone efficiency remain, Smith has embraced his role, praising the balance of professional and personal fulfillment he’s found with the Steelers.
“There’s a lot to be said about personal and professional happiness,” he remarked. “I love being a Steeler.”
