NFL Trade Rumors: Tennessee Titans Signing Safety Mike Edwards

A two-time Super Bowl champion has found a new home. According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, former Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Mike Edwards is signing with the Tennessee Titans.

Edwards initially signed with the Buffalo Bills this offseason but failed to crack their defensive back rotation, logging a mere seven defensive snaps over three appearances. They granted him his release earlier this week. So long as he passes his physical, he won't be on the market for long.

Edwards has been a generally effective defensive back since joining the league as a third-round pick in 2019, but he has failed to establish himself as a consistent starter. Still, he has been a valuable cog on some winning teams. He appeared in 16 games for the 2020 Super Bowl Champion Bucs and played 621 defensive snaps for the 2022 Super Bowl Champion Chiefs. He also has a knack for big plays in big moments, with three career interceptions in postseason play.

Edwards is unlikely to find many of those opportunities in Tennessee. The Titans are 2-6 at the season's midway point and have all but conceded the 2024 regular season. They jettisoned five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins in late October, and their -73 point differential is the third-worst mark in the AFC. At this point, the Titans have a better chance at the first overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft than they do of making the playoffs.

Ultimately, Edwards is a band-aid on a gaping wound. He might have been an asset to the Chiefs or the Bucs had he reunited with either organization, but barring a late-season release, he'll likely toil in obscurity for the rest of the season before looking for a new team again in 2025.
