NFL Trade Rumors: Steelers Tried To Acquire D.K. Metcalf

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a strong push to upgrade their receiving corps before the trade deadline, with Seattle Seahawks star D.K. Metcalf as one of their primary targets.

Despite Metcalf missing Week 9 due to a knee injury, the Steelers inquired about his availability, hoping to secure a dynamic playmaker to bolster their struggling offense.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler confirmed Pittsburgh's interest, explaining, “When a recent report surfaced indicating teams were inquiring with the Seahawks on Metcalf, it was safe to assume the Steelers were part of that mix.”

However, Seattle quickly shut down any trade discussions, prioritizing Metcalf’s role within their offense, as he remains under contract through 2025 with a lucrative three-year, $72 million extension.

The Steelers explored multiple options for wide receiver reinforcements, considering high-profile names like Brandon Aiyuk, Cooper Kupp, and Davante Adams.

Still, Metcalf’s combination of size, speed, and established chemistry with new Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson made him a particularly enticing option.

According to sources, the Seahawks’ asking price for Metcalf would have been “at least a first-round pick,” a cost Pittsburgh was ultimately unwilling to pay.

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio also highlighted that Metcalf’s availability would have required a “steep price,” reflecting Seattle’s commitment to retaining their star receiver amid strong league-wide interest.

Although the Steelers ultimately acquired veteran wide receiver Mike Williams in a lower-profile deal, their interest in Metcalf shows their intent to build a more potent passing game around Wilson and George Pickens.

Williams brings experience and a physical presence to the roster, yet he lacks the explosive upside that Metcalf could have offered.
