NFL Trade Rumors: Dallas Cowboys to Continue Starting Quarterback Cooper Rush

The Dallas Cowboys aren't ready to make a quarterback change quite yet. While appearing on 105.3 The Fan, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said backup quarterback Cooper Rush gives his team "the best chance to win" and will continue to start in place of injured quarterback Dak Prescott.

Rush was once one of the more reliable backups in the league, winning five of six starts from 2021 to 2022. However, he has struggled mightily over his two starts this season, leading the Cowboys to consecutive losses and a combined -52 point differential.

Rush's ineffectiveness has led to calls for the Cowboys to start Trey Lance, the Cowboys' third-string quarterback. The San Francisco 49ers drafted Lance third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, but injuries prevented him from ever truly establishing himself as a franchise passer. After only four career starts, the Cowboys acquired Lance for a fourth-round pick in 2023. He has thrown a mere six regular-season pass attempts since.

Given they're 3-7 and Prescott is done for the year, the Cowboys need to consider their priorities carefully. It's possible Rush does increase the Cowboys' chances to win, but that doesn't necessarily serve them. Losing games and improving their draft position will arguably better position the Cowboys for a productive 2025. Evaluating Lance would be a bonus.

Still, we shouldn't necessarily take the Cowboys at their word. They may have an ulterior motive in starting Rush: Lance is an unrestricted free agent following the season. Allowing him to see some regular-season action could enhance his value around the league and complicate re-signing him. Starting Rush may allow the Cowboys to eventually secure Lance at a bargain rate.
