NFL Rumors: Jets Trade For Wide Receiver That Nearly Happened Revealed

The New York Jets and Denver Broncos came close to completing a blockbuster trade involving wide receiver Jerry Jeudy this past offseason, but ownership decisions and financial concerns ultimately derailed the deal.

According to The Athletic, Jets GM Joe Douglas proposed sending Allen Lazard and a Day 2 draft pick to Denver in exchange for Jeudy, with the Broncos willing to absorb part of Lazard’s $13 million annual cap hit.

The trade appeared to align with both teams' needs—Denver sought a physical "big slot" receiver in Lazard, a player head coach Sean Payton had long admired for his blocking and versatility, while the Jets aimed to upgrade their wide receiver corps.

However, Jets owner Woody Johnson vetoed the move, and Jeudy was later traded to the Cleveland Browns for a far lower return of fifth- and sixth-round picks.

Payton reportedly valued Lazard as a hybrid pass-catcher capable of adding physicality to the offense, particularly as Denver struggled to find consistency in that role. However, absorbing Lazard’s multi-year contract posed challenges, especially with the Broncos needing financial flexibility.

Meanwhile, Jeudy was considered expendable given Denver’s broader roster needs and the uncertainty of his contract status.

After being dealt to Cleveland, Jeudy signed a three-year, $52.5 million extension and has since delivered a solid performance with 39 catches for 560 yards and two touchdowns.

Jeudy, reflecting on the situation, posted cryptically on social media, “Nah I did lol,” suggesting he may have also played a role in halting the move.
