New York Jets Not Expected To "Want" Aaron Rodgers Back Next Season

The New York Jets are reportedly considering moving on from Aaron Rodgers after the 2024 season, as the team looks to reset following a disastrous campaign.

Despite high expectations, the Jets have stumbled to a 3-8 record, leading owner Woody Johnson to overhaul the organization, including firing general manager Joe Douglas and head coach Robert Saleh.

Rodgers, returning from a torn Achilles, has failed to deliver at an elite level, with career lows in passer rating (88.9) and yards per attempt (6.4).

While he has thrown 17 touchdowns against seven interceptions, his performance has raised questions about whether he can still lead a team to contention.

"At this point, Rodgers likely won't want to return to this situation anyway," The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt reported, citing the team’s struggles and Johnson’s apparent frustration.

The turmoil has persisted despite bold moves to bolster the roster, including a midseason trade for wide receiver Davante Adams, Rodgers’ former Green Bay teammate.

However, the Adams addition has yielded little improvement, and reports suggest Johnson even contemplated benching Rodgers for backup Tyrod Taylor after a Week 4 loss, though the coaching staff advised against it to avoid further locker-room instability.

With no guaranteed money left on Rodgers' contract for 2025, the Jets have an opportunity to release him post-June 1, spreading his $49 million dead cap hit over two years. This would free the team to draft and develop a new franchise quarterback while pursuing a short-term bridge option if necessary.

Potential landing spots for Rodgers include teams like the San Francisco 49ers, Minnesota Vikings, and Las Vegas Raiders, who may see value in the veteran as a bridge quarterback for playoff pushes or mentoring younger players.

As SNY’s Connor Hughes noted, “The Jets need to reset, and Rodgers’ return feels increasingly unlikely given the direction the franchise is headed.”
