Chargers Claim Former 2nd-Round Pick Safety Off Waivers

The Los Angeles Chargers have added to their secondary by claiming veteran safety Marcus Maye off waivers from the Miami Dolphins, addressing depth concerns as they gear up for a playoff push.

The move comes in response to cornerback Eli Apple being placed on injured reserve and starter Alohi Gilman missing practice this week.

Maye, 31, a former second-round pick, brings eight years of NFL experience and over 400 career tackles to a defense that already features All-Pro Derwin James and ranks first in points allowed this season.

“Marcus brings a wealth of knowledge and versatility to our defense,” said head coach Jim Harbaugh. “His veteran presence adds critical depth as we push toward the postseason.”

Maye appeared in 11 games for Miami this season, making three starts and recording 30 tackles, a tackle for loss, and a pass defended.

Waived by the Dolphins to activate rookie Patrick McMorris from injured reserve, Maye’s solid performance in 2024 earned him a Pro Football Focus grade of 21st among safeties, signaling a strong rebound after a challenging 2023 season.

Bringing versatility and leadership, Maye has started 80 of 88 career games across stints with the New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, and Dolphins. “He’s been a reliable presence in this league for years, and his experience adds valuable depth to our safety group,” said a Chargers team source.

The Chargers acquired Maye for just over $400,000 for the remainder of the season, making it a low-risk, high-reward addition.
