Trades to Make: New York Jets Wide Receiver Mike Williams

The NFL has seen several high-profile trades in recent weeks, but there's still time for teams to shake things up. In Trades to Make, we'll cover some of the best players who could be on the move before the November 5th trade deadline.

Wide Receiver Mike Williams

The New York Jets signed long-time Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams to a one-year, $10 million deal in March, but their recent acquisition of former Las Vegas Raiders All-Pro Davante Adams has rendered him expendable. Williams' 17 targets were already fifth on the team even prior to Adams' arrival.

The Chargers took Williams seventh overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, and the elite traits that made him a top pick are still apparent today. He's a big-bodied, down-field threat with a proven ability to win in contested catch situations.

Who should be interested?

Williams' best asset is his ability to reward daring (even reckless) throws down the field and along the sidelines. He's too injury-prone and unpolished as a route runner to be any team's top choice for targets, but he can punish defenses that leave him single-covered. Given he's buried on the Jets' depth chart and on a one-year deal, he could probably be snatched for a late-round pick.

Williams would fit best on a team with a struggling offense that's willing to take high-risk shots for the occasional big play. The Pittsburgh Steelers could use someone to draw attention away from top pass catcher George Pickens, and Williams is exactly the type of player who could make the most of quarterback Russell Wilson's high, arching throws.

A return to the AFC West would also make sense for Williams. The Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos desperately need bodies to fill out their tattered receiver corps, and both need to keep pace with the Kansas City Chiefs, who recently acquired wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins from the Tennessee Titans.
