NFL Trade Rumors: New York Jets Acquire Las Vegas Raiders Wide Receiver Davante Adams

The deal is done. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the New York Jets have acquired six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for a conditional 2025 third-round pick.

The third-rounder can become a second-rounder if Adams makes first or second-team All-Pro this season or if the Jets make the AFC Championship game with Adams on the roster. The Jets will absorb the entirety of Adams' remaining $11.6 million in 2024 salary.

The Jets have been the favorite to land Adams ever since he made his desire to be traded known early in October. Adams will now reunite with former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Adams helped Rodgers win three MVPs from 2014 to 2021, and the Packers even finished as the league's top-scoring offense in 2014 and 2020.

Adams' arrival comes at just the right time for the scrambling Jets offense. They've stumbled out the gate through the first six weeks of the regular season, averaging 18.8 points per game and a middling 4.9 yards per play. Rodgers, in particular, has seemed frustrated: He's on pace for career worsts in net yards per attempt (5.44) and passer rating (84.4).

Assuming Adams can quickly overcome the hamstring injury that has cost him the last three games, he should immediately transform the Jets offense. He'll likely absorb a massive portion of the targets typically reserved for wide receiver Garrett Wilson, and 2024 free agent acquisition Mike Williams will probably see his snaps drastically reduced. From 2018 to 2021, Rodgers targeted Adams a colossal 10.8 times per game.

Still, Adams radically changing the Jets' fortunes isn't necessarily a sure bet. The three-time All-Pro will turn 32 years old in December, and he declined steeply in 2023, accounting for his lowest yards per game (67.3) and yards per target (6.5) since at least 2017. The dominance of him and Rodgers as a duo may also be somewhat overestimated: The last season they were together, the 2021 Packers finished 10th in scoring with 26.5 points per game before losing their opening game of the postseason 13-10 to the San Francisco 49ers.

Ultimately, adding Adams will be a high-risk, high-reward gamble. His acquisition is the latest major move in what has been a wild week for the Jets that included firing head coach Robert Saleh and stripping offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett of play-calling duties. Clearly, the Jets aren't willing to settle for mediocrity despite their 2-4 start. They're shooting for the stars this season, even if it increases their chances of crashing and burning.
