Love exited after 44 snaps in Week 8 due to a groin strain, having completed 14 of 22 passes for 196 yards and one interception. He was replaced early in the third quarter by backup Malik Willis, who led the Packers to their final 17 points.
Love has been one of the most prolific passers in the league this year, throwing for 257.8 passing yards per game at an explosive 7.14 net yards per passing attempt. However, he has been notably turnover-prone, tossing a league-high nine interceptions despite missing nearly two and a half games.
If Love is anything short of full health, the Packers may be better off resting him. Willis has generally been excellent in relief, leading the Packers to three wins over his last three appearances. He may not be as dynamic a thrower as Love, but he has averaged an impressive 8.27 net yards per passing attempt and 8.60 yards per rushing attempt. He has also remained turnover-free over his 161 snaps.
The novelty that Willis brings to the Packers offense will eventually run its course. But for now, the Packers need to do everything they can to match up against a Lions team that is coming in with a league-best +100 point differential. If there's any chance Willis's ability as a runner presents issues for a Lions defense that ranks 22nd in rushing yards per attempt allowed, the Packers should let Love recover until after their Week 10 bye.
