Washington Commanders Release Kicker After 2 Missed Field Goals

The Washington Commanders have released kicker Cade York after a disappointing performance in their season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

York missed two field goals, from 56 and 47 yards, and sent a kickoff out of bounds, giving Tampa Bay favorable field position multiple times during the game.

While York converted both of his extra-point attempts, his overall struggles contributed to the Commanders' 37-20 loss.

The team had recently acquired York from the Cleveland Browns in a trade, but due to his short stint in Washington, the Commanders will not have to surrender the conditional seventh-round pick tied to his performance.

York, a fourth-round pick by the Browns in the 2022 NFL Draft, showed promise early in his career with a long field goal of 58 yards but struggled with consistency.

After making 24 of 32 field goals as a rookie, his performance declined, leading to his release by Cleveland.

He spent time on the practice squads of the Tennessee Titans and New York Giants in 2023 before rejoining the Browns briefly in 2024.

His short tenure with the Commanders now marks his fourth NFL team, as York continues to search for stability in the league.

The Commanders are expected to sign veteran kicker Austin Seibert to replace York.

Seibert, who also began his career with the Browns, has a solid track record, converting 45 of 53 field goals over his career.

Washington has faced ongoing challenges at the kicker position, having released several kickers this year, including Brandon McManus, Ramiz Ahmed, and Riley Patterson.
