NFL Trade Rumors: Cleveland Browns Running Back Nick Chubb Expected to Return to Practice This Week

The Cleveland Brown offense is about to get a much-needed boost. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, four-time Pro Bowl running back Nick Chubb will finally return to practice this week after missing 17 straight games with a multi-ligament knee injury.  Chubb injured his knee in a Week 2 matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers last year and missed the remainder of the season. He opened the offseason on the players unable to perform list as he continued his recovery. Players will be eligible to return from PUP following Week 4.

Chubb is not expected to play in the Browns' Week 5 matchup against the Washington Commanders, but the Browns will open his three-week practice window this week, which indicates they expect him back by Week 7.

The Browns desperately need something to turn their offense around. They currently rank 31st in yards gained due in large part to the continued struggles of quarterback Deshaun Watson. Through three games, the former Houston Texan has netted a paltry 152.3 passing yards per game while absorbing a league-high 16 sacks.

The Browns arguably have the worst passing attack in the league at the moment, but Chubb's return could at least allow them to reestablish their run game. Chubb has been one of the league's most dominant backs since entering the league in 2018, averaging 84.6 rushing yards per game at an amazing 5.3 yards per carry.

If Chubb can hit the ground running in his return, his presence could open things up for the Browns' passing game and help the team get back in the playoff hunt. At the very least, he should provide his team a few more opportunities per game to get the ball out of Watson's hands. That's a massive win for the Browns.
