Injury Update on Green Bay Packers Quarterback Jordan Love

The Green Bay Packers and their fans will have to hold their breath for a little while longer. According to the Athletic's Diana Russini, quarterback Jordan Love will undergo an MRI for a leg injury once the Packers arrive home following Friday night's game in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Love went down in agony after being violently twisted during a desperate, late-game play in last night's 29-34 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He remained down for an extended period before being helped off the field by Packers trainers. Mallik Willis replaced him for the game's final two snaps.

Russini notes that the Packers have ruled out an ankle injury for Love, which is good news. However, Love isn't out of the woods yet. He could still be facing a knee or bone injury. In any case, his availability for the near future is certainly in doubt.

It's incredibly unfortunate timing for the Packers. Despite only 18 career starts, they made Love the league's highest-paid player this past summer by inking him to a four-year, $220 million extension. Availability is just as important as ability at the quarterback position, and a significant injury for Love could impact his play even beyond this season.

If Love misses time, the Packers will find themselves in a very tough spot. Willis has averaged a miserable 3.26 net yards per passing attempt and a disastrous 4.5% interception rate over his sporadic regular season appearances. He isn't a credible backup option, and the Packers offense will struggle every time he takes the field. If Love's injury costs him more than a game or two, the Packers would be wise to find an alternative to Willis in free agency or even via trade.
