San Francisco 49ers Sign 7-Year Veteran Running Back

The San Francisco 49ers have signed running back Matt Breida, bringing back a familiar face to bolster their backfield.

Breida, who began his NFL career with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2017, has had stints with the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, and most recently, the New York Giants.

Over his seven-year career, Breida has accumulated 2,652 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on 575 carries, along with 120 receptions for 935 yards and six receiving touchdowns.

His most productive season came in 2018 with the 49ers, where he recorded 814 rushing yards and three touchdowns, in addition to 27 receptions for 261 yards and two receiving touchdowns.

Breida's return to San Francisco comes at a time when the 49ers manage injuries within their running back corps.

Rookie Isaac Guerendo is currently sidelined with a significant hamstring injury, and Elijah Mitchell's recent absence from practice suggests a potential setback.

The team is cautious about overloading Christian McCaffrey during the preseason, making Breida's familiarity with head coach Kyle Shanahan's system and his previous success with the team invaluable.

This signing indicates that Breida will likely be integrated into the rotation swiftly, providing depth and experience.

Alongside McCaffrey, Breida, and the emerging Jordan Mason, who is expected to assume primary RB2 duties if Mitchell remains out, the team also has undrafted free agent Cody Schrader and Patrick Taylor Jr. competing for roster spots.
