6-Year Veteran Wide Receiver Announces Retirement

Michael Gallup has announced his retirement from the NFL at the age of 28, just a day before the Las Vegas Raiders' first training camp practice.

The Raiders placed the veteran wide receiver on the reserve/retired list on Tuesday, marking the end of his professional football career.

Gallup had signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Raiders as a free agent this offseason, and he was expected to compete for a backup receiver role before deciding to step away from the game.

Gallup spent all six of his NFL seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, who drafted him in the third round out of Colorado State in 2018.

He made an immediate impact as a rookie, recording 507 yards, and his standout season came in 2019 when he caught 66 passes for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns, becoming a top target for quarterback Dak Prescott.

However, a torn ACL in 2021 significantly hampered his performance, and despite signing a five-year, $57.5 million contract extension with the Cowboys in 2022, he struggled to regain his previous form, managing 73 receptions for 842 yards and six touchdowns over the past two seasons.

In total, Gallup finishes his career with 266 receptions for 3,744 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Despite facing challenges in the latter part of his career, his contributions to the Cowboys' offense were significant, particularly during his breakout 2019 season.

Gallup's decision to retire leaves a notable void in the Raiders' receiving corps as they head into training camp.
