It's fair to say St. Brown's deal is the richest the wide receiver contract in the league, and it will likely become the floor for any theoretical extensions in the works for Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson. The deal reportedly includes $77 million in guaranteed money, besting Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp's previous record of $75 million. The $30 million annual average matches the previous record set by Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill, but that deal is generally believed to be artificially inflated due to a $43.9 million salary in its final year that few expect to ever be paid.
The 112th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, St. Brown immediately outperformed his draft valuation by leading the Lions in receptions (90), receiving yards (912), and touchdowns (5) as a rookie. He improved on all three marks in each of the last two seasons, culminating in a first-team All-Pro 2023 season that included 119 receptions, 1515 receiving yards, and 10 touchdowns.
Still only 24 years old, St. Brown's development demonstrates just how bright the Lions' future currently is. They finished fifth in points scored (27.1) and made only their second NFC Championship Game appearance in franchise history last year, and St. Brown is unquestionably their best and most valuable pass catcher. With St. Brown, a quality offensive line, and franchise quarterback Jared Goff all in place, the Lions have an offense that should be near the top of the league for years to come.
