NFL Rumors: New York Jets Have Considered Signing Veteran Wide Receiver
The New York Jets have been actively pursuing a trade for Aaron Rodgers this offseason, but concerns about fitting his contract into their salary cap have limited their activity in signing free agents.
Despite this, the Jets have been linked to several veteran players, including Randall Cobb, Marcedes Lewis, Odell Beckham Jr., and Julio Jones, according to a former NFL executive.
While signing players that could help make Rodgers happy may seem logical, it's unclear why the Jets would be interested in adding another aging wide receiver in Jones, who struggled with injuries and had his least productive season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last year.
With young and emerging talent such as Garrett Wilson and Corey Davis already on the roster, it's puzzling why the Jets would want to allocate more resources to the wide receiver position.
The addition of Allen Lazard to the Jets' roster further complicates matters, as the team gave him a sizable contract and likely has significant plans for him. It's unclear where Jones would fit into this already crowded receiving corps.
If the Jets are serious about contending with Rodgers, they may need to prioritize addressing other areas of their team instead of adding more players to a position that already has significant depth. Photo Credit: Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports
