NFL Draft Profile: Calijah Kancey
As the NFL's annual free agency frenzy comes to a close, it's time for teams to look forward to the year's best and last chance to improve their rosters: the NFL Draft. As April 27th approaches, we'll look at the prospects most likely to transform a franchise's fortunes.
The Player: Calijah Kancey, Defensive Tackle
If you can draw Aaron Donald comparisons, you must be doing something right. As an undersized but lightening quick All-American defensive tackle out of Pitt, Calijah Kancey immediately conjures memories of the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year. With 16.0 sacks and 34.5 tackles for loss on his resume, Kancey doesn't approach Donald's legendary production (29.5 sacks, 66.0 tackles for loss), but even a pale imitation is extremely enticing.
The Tools:
Kancey measured in at 6'1" and 281 lbs at the combine and demonstrated otherworldly speed, recording a baffling 4.67 second 40-yard dash. That time is the best ever for a player of his size, narrowly edging out Aaron Donald's record of 4.68 seconds. That speed shows up on tape: his suddenness and power at the line of scrimmage cause fits for interior offensive linemen. Kancey declined to participate in any other tests. Why not. Quit while you're ahead.
The Verdict:
Donald comparisons are unfair and premature, but Kancey has an incredibly valuable skillset that teams should covet. He probably won't be a multi-time DPOY, but his athleticism and production are incredibly promising. He may not be built to handle NFL run games, but that matters less and less every year. His pass-rushing potential alone should merit a first-round pick.
