3 Teams Who Should Pursue Derek Carr
The Las Vegas Raiders dramatically benched quarterback Derek Carr earlier this week, signalling the likely end of his tenure with the team. Here are the three organizations that could most benefit from acquiring the three-time Pro Bowler this offseason.
Washington Commanders
The Commanders had a dramatic benching of their own earlier this week when they replaced Taylor Heinicke with Carson Wentz. No team has been more competitive this year with worse quarter play; the Commanders are 7-7-1 while ranking 19th in passing yards and 22nd in net yards per passing attempt. Carr could help the Commanders make the most of first-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Terry McLaurin and young, promising pass catcher Jahan Dotson.
Indianapolis Colts
The 4-10-1 Colts have made trades for veteran quarterbacks the last two offseasons that didn't work out, but it shouldn't dissuade them from rolling the dice again with Carr. Where Carson Wentz and Matt Ryan failed, Carr can still succeed. The Colts rank last in giveaways this year and 31st in net passing yards per attempt. Even if the Colts don't have the talent to be a great offense, Carr can at least limit mistakes, and that might be enough to compete in the AFC South next year.
Carolina Panthers
The Panthers have started three different quarterbacks multiple games this year yet remain squarely in the hunt for the NFC South crown at 6-9. They run the ball well (10th in rushing yards and rushing yards per attempt) and have a reliable WR1 in D.J. Moore. The NFC South is up for grabs this year, even with Tom Brady on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If he leaves for greener pastures, the division could belong to the Panthers with Carr's help.
