Mitchell has been sidelined since spraining the MCL in his right knee in the season opener. Since then, the 49ers have used Jeff Wilson as the lead back until the acquisition of Chrisitan McCaffrey.
After two games with McCaffrey on the roster and Mitchell getting closer to a return, the team opted to deal Wilson to the Miami Dolphins on Tuesday, paving the way for Mitchell to be the No. 2 back, once healthy.
The 49ers need to first make the procedural move of designating him to return from the injured reserve in order to reintegarate him into practice. His practice reports next week should determine if he is indeed ready to return in Week 10.
