Penny suffered an ankle injury in Week 5's 39-32 loss to the New Orleans Saints. He had been off to a scintillating start to the season, averaging 6.1 yards per attempt on his 346 rushing yards. He is expected to miss the remainder of the season.
Jones is a relatively unproven running back with a mere 59 carries across his 14 appearances. He has struggled in his limited snaps, averaging a meagre 2.8 yards per rushing attempt over his three-year career. Despite his lack of success, he was apparently a hot commodity on the waiver wire: the Seahawks won out over attempted claims from the Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos.
Jones entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame, earning his first major opportunity as a pro with the New Orleans Saints in 2020. The Saints waived him on October 8th.New Seahawks RB Tony Jones was a popular player on waivers: both the Broncos and Cardinals tried to claim Jones off of waivers as well, per source, but Seattle had top priority.
