Cardinals Sign Former Colts Kicker To 53-Man Roster

The Arizona Cardinals have had a disappointing start to the 2022 season, getting back to 3-4 with a victory over the New Orleans Saints on Thursday Night Football, but like plenty of other teams, they have been dealing with an insane amount of injuries thus far. One of those injuries is to legendary kicker Matt Prater, who has made over 350 field goals in his career, but thus far in 2022, has been limited to just four games.

The team went out and signed former Indianapolis Colt Rodrigo Blankenship to their practice squad, elevating him for the Thursday Night matchup with New Orleans where he would go 2-2 on field goals and 2-3 on extra points. Now, the Cardinals have signed him to the 53-man roster, which is a solid indication that Prater won't be able to make it back for the teams Week 8 matchup with the 5-1 Minnesota Vikings.

In three years at the NFL level, Blankenship has made 47-59 kicks, and although he's not at the elite level of Justin Tucker or Harrison Butker, he has the potential to be a good starter at the NFL level, and now, the Cardinals are hoping he can be solid while they wait for Prater to get healthy.
