San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Done for the Year
It's official. San Francisco 49er head coach Kyle Shanahan announced at his Monday media availability that quarterback Trey Lance will undergo surgery to repair his broken ankle, officially ending his season after two games:
Lance initially took the starting gig following a 2021 season that saw Garoppolo lead his team to the NFC Championship game. The third overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, Lance was expected to add a dangerous running element at the quarterback position that the 49ers hoped could take their offense to another level. Garoppolo held on to starting duties in Lance's rookie year but ceded the top job over the offseason. The team held onto Garoppolo despite months of trade rumors, and they're lucky they did. Lance's absence lowers the ceiling for the 49ers in the 2022 season, but Garoppolo should keep the team competitive in the coming months.

Lance suffered the injury during an awkward collision early in the team's 27-7 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. Jimmy Garoppolo stepped in for Lance, leading three touchdown drives to secure the easy win. He'll start for the remainder of the season.
