San Francisco 49ers Lose Superstar Tackle to Ankle Injury
The San Francisco 49ers may be short their best player in the coming weeks. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport revealed Monday morning that the team fears left tackle Trent Williams suffered a high-ankle sprain during the 49er's 11-10 defeat to the Denver Broncos.
Williams has emerged as one of the league's best players since joining the 49ers in 2020. After notching an incredible seven Pro Bowls during a nine-year stint in Washington, Willaims held out during the 2019 season and eventually secured a trade to the 49ers. He was awarded his lone first-team All-Pro in 2021, earning a staggering 98.3 regular season grade from Pro Football Focus, the highest mark awarded to any player in the website's history. A future Hall-of-Famer, Williams will be sorely missed should he be unavailable for any amount of time. The 49ers face the Los Angeles Rams in a crucial NFC West showdown on Monday Night Football in Week 4.
Williams limped off the field following a disastrous third-quarter safety in which 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo thoughtlessly stepped out of bounds. Williams was replaced in the lineup by Jaylon Moore, a 2021 fifth-round draft pick with a mere three starts in his career.#49ers LT Trent Williams is believed to have suffered a high-ankle sprain, making protecting Jimmy Garoppolo a little bit more difficult: https://t.co/jQM2qnJvzO
