Slater left during the second half of the Chargers' Week 3 38-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. His injury was the team's second major departure of the game, following defensive end Joey Bosa's first-quarter exit. In Slater's absence, Storm Norton entered the lineup. The game quickly unravelled in the second half with the Jaguars scoring three unanswered touchdowns to walk away with the dominant upset win.

Drafted 13th overall in 2021, Slater found immediate success as the blindside protector for the Chargers and their young quarterback Justin Herbert, earning a Pro Bowl appearance as a rookie. He sparked a massive turnaround for the Chargers' offensive line, lifting the unit from a 32nd Pro Football Focus ranking in 2020 to a 10th overall ranking following the 2021 season. Without Slater, the Chargers offense will struggle mightily to replicate last year's fifth-ranked finish in points scored.
