Colts Reach Huge Extension With Star Offensive Lineman
The Indianapolis Colts drafted guard Quenton Nelson No. 6 overall in 2018, and in four years with the team, he has been selected as an All-Pro in three of them, and started in 61 of a possible 65 games over that stretch. To say that was a great pick, especially when they received compensation from the Jets who moved up to No. 3 overall is an absolute understatement, as he has been a rock for this franchise.
Today, he is being rewarded for his consistent brilliance in protecting this Quarterback carousel, setting a huge precedent with a four-year extension worth $20 million AAV, with $60 million coming in guaranteed money. It may sound like a lot for an offensive lineman, but Nelson has been incredible in his stint with the Colts and has been arguably the best guard in the NFL over that stint.Colts’ Pro-Bowl OL Quenton Nelson reached agreement on a precedent-setting, four-year extension averaging $20 million per year, including $60 million guaranteed, making him the highest-paid guard in NFL history, per source. At just 26-years of age, Nelson still has plenty of growing to do, and if Matt Ryan can start making plays as the QB and leader of this offence, Nelson should be able to help take this team on a deep run. The Colts begin 2022 tomorrow in Houston against the division rival Texans, and getting this deal done now will allow Nelson to focus on the playoff push ahead.
