The Packers are set to do this with Smith as a way to open up cap space. Although this is understandable, it's clear that Green Bay will now have to find a replacement for the two-time Pro Bowler. Furthermore, Smith should receive a lot of attention on the open market, as he is one of the top linebackers now available.
After making back-to-back Pro Bowls with the Packers over the two previous seasons, Smith was limited to just one regular-season game this season after having back surgery. He did, however, return to the team during the postseason for one contest, too.
When seeing how dominant Smith was just one season ago, there's no question that there will be several teams pursuing him. It will be intriguing to see where the star ends up from here.
